On the Fly

I was hunting the edge of a field and had been watching a few small bucks chase does that morning, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a doe running toward the treeline to my right. When I looked through my binoculars, I saw another young buck chasing her but failed to notice what was lurking further behind. By the time I spotted this buck, he was approximatley 50 yards from the treeline and was closing in fast. I only had a split second to decide whether or not he was a shooter (hence the title "On the fly). I fired a shot off just as he made a final leap into the timber and vanished. As far as I'm concerned, I made the right decision. After hunting public land in Missouri for several years, I can appreciate BCL and this great property!
