This Knox County farm offers a great mix of habitat consisting of timber, row crops, good underbrush within the timber, a pond, and Pope Creek, which meanders through the property and provides both water and a natural travel corridor. Knox County has long been one of the more sought-after counties in western Illinois for both hunting leases and land ownership. The county has built a strong reputation among deer hunting community and continues to produce quality bucks year after year. One of the things I noticed while looking at the aerial and walking the farm was how much edge habitat is present throughout the property. Pope Creek winds through the farm and is lined with timber and cover, creating a natural travel route. There are also several fingers of cover that extend into the surrounding crop fields, along with a number of locations where deer movement should naturally funnel through smaller areas. The farm offers a good balance of cover and food. Thick underbrush provides bedding and security cover, while the row crops offer a dependable food source. The pond and Pope Creek provide a year-round water source, which will be very valuable during the pre-rut and rut. The railroad tracks along the east side and the dead-end road on the west side are additional features worth noting. Neither guarantees anything, but both can help reduce pressure and disturbance compared to properties located along heavily traveled roads. Several areas of the farm stood out as likely stand locations, particularly where field edges, creek crossings, timber, and cover come together. These spots should be worth a look during the early season and become even more attractive as deer movement increases during the pre-rut and rut. This is the type of farm we all look for when looking for a lease.
