Sitting right on the Sangamon River in Menard County is a farm that has everything a serious hunter looks for. This farm has a proven history of producing mature bucks year after year, and once you step foot on it, you will understand why. The aerial photo does not do this farm justice. Big bucks live in these river bottoms and use this farm. The property is made up of timber, row crops, CRP, water, and thick bedding cover. It is the perfect mix of habitat in an area that is well known for producing quality deer. While walking the farm, the landowner and I jumped several deer, and there was plenty of sign throughout the property. The north side of the farm along the river is a mix of timber, row crops, and CRP, creating a natural travel corridor and transition area that deer were clearly using.
There is an elevated box blind that sits along the timbers edge of the CRP field that was strategically placed by the landowner, who no longer hunts. In addition to the box blind, there are several strong stand locations and a couple areas where the landowner had food plot planted. Yes, food plots are allowed, but you will need to coordinate with him on where they can be planted because they cannot be planted on the CRP filter strips. The landowne has a CuddeLink camera system set up on the farm for security purposes, and that is where some of the trail camera photos have come from. Another big advantage to this farm is the established trail system, which allows you to quietly access different parts of the property and sneak in and out of stand locations. Farms along the Sangamon River with this kind of habitat mix, access, and history do not come available very often. If you are a serious hunter looking for a real opportunity at a mature Illinois whitetail, this is a farm you need to take a very hard look at.
